Some photography sessions leave a lasting impression — not just because of the images captured, but because of the story behind them. Over Memorial Day weekend, I had the incredible honor of photographing a multi-generational family in celebration of their patriarch’s 95th birthday. The session took place right in the family’s stunning backyard garden in Riverwoods, Illinois — a place that felt every bit as warm and welcoming as the people themselves.

This wasn’t just a family portrait. It was a celebration of life, legacy, and love. Children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren traveled from across the country to be there — four generations gathered in one place to honor the man whose love built the family they are today.

A Legacy Worth Capturing

I’ve had the privilege of photographing this family in the past, but this session was truly special. It was the first time I photographed the grandfather — surrounded by all of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Seeing everyone together, sharing laughs, exchanging hugs, and retelling stories was a moving reminder of why family photography matters.

In many ways, this session felt like a living time capsule. These portraits will be shared, framed, and treasured by generations to come.

The Setting: A Garden Full of Memories

The family’s garden in Riverwoods served as the perfect setting for this milestone session. Lush greenery, blooming flowers, and golden early-summer light provided a peaceful and picturesque backdrop. More than just beautiful scenery, it was a space filled with memories — a place the family had gathered in for years, now the scene of a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Four Generations, One Frame

Perhaps the most powerful image of the day was the one that brought everyone together — four generations surrounding the grandfather who started it all. It’s an image that says so much without needing a single word. This is what legacy looks like.

Why Now Is the Time for Extended Family Photos

Life moves fast, and families grow and change quickly. Extended family sessions like this one offer a rare chance to pause, be present, and preserve a piece of your family’s story — especially when you have the opportunity to include grandparents or great-grandparents.

Whether it’s a milestone birthday, a family reunion, or simply a long-overdue gathering, these moments deserve to be documented.
